The Tapo C425 is TP-Link's wire-free MagCam for places where a cable run is the problem. The official spec sheet lists a 1/3 inch progressive scan CMOS starlight sensor, 2K QHD 2560 by 1440 video, a 2.1 mm F2.1 lens, a 142-degree diagonal field of view, 850 nm infrared to 49 feet, full-colour night vision, four built-in spotlights, IP66 weatherproofing, 512 GB microSD support, and a built-in rechargeable battery. It is useful in the Tapo ecosystem, but it should not be described like a wired RTSP camera.
Design and build favour wire-free mounting.
The C425 uses a magnetic base, a removable wall plate, and a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery instead of a permanent power tail. TP-Link rates the housing IP66 and lists tabletop, ceiling, and wall mounting options. The body also includes reset and power buttons, a microSD slot up to 512 GB, and optional support for the Tapo A200 solar panel.
Image quality delivers 2K QHD from a wide lens.
The 1/3 inch starlight sensor records 2560 by 1440 over H.264, with 15, 20, 25, and 30 fps options. The 2.1 mm F2.1 lens covers 142 degrees diagonally, 134 degrees horizontally, and 77 degrees vertically, which is wider than most fixed indoor Tapos. The 12x digital zoom is useful for review, but the real advantage is seeing more of a gate, shed, or side path from one battery mount.
Night vision uses colour and infrared.
Night vision combines one 850 nm infrared LED rated to 49 feet, or 15 metres, with full-colour night vision from the starlight sensor and four built-in spotlights. That makes the C425 more useful than a monochrome battery camera when the scene has enough ambient light or when spotlight activation is acceptable.
Battery life depends on viewing time.
TP-Link markets up to 300 days from the built-in battery, but the footnote matters: that lab figure is based on 230 seconds of use per day, while 360 seconds per day lowers the claim to 180 days. A desktop viewer changes that equation. Leave wired cameras in TapoAppForPC all day; use C425 live view only when the battery budget makes sense.
RTSP and TapoAppForPC use the battery-camera path.
The C425 does not list RTSP or ONVIF on the official specification table. TapoAppForPC should therefore treat it differently from wired Tapos: native battery-camera support can open live view on demand, but the C425 is not a persistent rtsp://192.168.x.x:554/stream1 source for an always-on grid.
Setup in TapoAppForPC is not the wired flow.
Set up the C425 in the Tapo phone app first, confirm it wakes and records normally, then add it to TapoAppForPC through the battery-camera path rather than the RTSP Camera Account path. The practical desktop use is a quick live check, battery status, solar status when paired with A200, and clip review, not a continuous multi-hour wall display.
Who should buy the Tapo C425.
Buy the C425 when the install point has no power, the view is wide, and event-based recording is acceptable. It fits a shed, gate, temporary side entrance, or rental wall where drilling for power is not worth it. Skip it if the camera must stay open on a PC all day.
Alternatives to the Tapo C425.
The Tapo C320WS is the better outdoor pick when power is available and continuous RTSP viewing matters. The Tapo C465 is the stronger battery upgrade if 4K detail and built-in solar matter more than price.
What we would buy differently.
If we knew the camera would live on the TapoAppForPC grid every day, we would not buy the C425. We would run power and use a C320WS, C325WB, or C520WS instead. The C425 earns its keep only when wire-free placement is the deciding constraint.

The C425 is a good battery Tapo and a poor wired-camera substitute. Its 142-degree 2K QHD view, IP66 shell, spotlights, and optional solar panel are exactly what a cable-free mount needs. For TapoAppForPC users, the buying decision is simple: choose C425 for occasional battery-camera access, not for continuous RTSP-style desktop monitoring.
